Vibram Furoshiki the wrapping sole wins the 2018 Golden Compass Award
The official ceremony for the awarding of the 2018 ADI (Italian Design Association) Golden Compass took place in the evening in the atmospheric setting of Castello Sforzesco in Milan, during which the President of the association presented Vibram with the most coveted award in the world of design, which is now at its 25th edition, for the product Vibram Furoshiki The Wrapping Sole.
In the presence of the authorities, members of the ADI, the public and the press, the president of the ADI, Luciano Galimberti, presented Vibram with the Golden Compass Award, assigned according to a pre-selection carried out by the ADI’s permanent Design Observatory, which is made up of experts, designers, critics, historians, and specialised journalists who every year select the products to be included in the annual ADI Design Index.
The awarded concept was to have developed an innovative Vibram sole which extends into the upper, in order to surround feet of all sizes, in any condition, guaranteeing a personalised fit and excellent levels of comfort. Inspired by the Japanese art of furoshiki, which involves the wrapping of any type of object in a single length of fabric, the Vibram Furoshiki The Wrapping Sole is based on a Vibram XS City rubber sole, which guarantees durability and grip on urban surfaces. The fabric selected by the company to create the upper is Sensitive Fabrics by Eurojersey.
The product Vibram Furoshiki The Wrapping Sole had already received various forms of Italian and international recognition for its originality and the innovative design: in fact, as well as becoming part of the ADI Design Index 2017, the “wrapping sole” has been assigned the Golden Compass International Award for the theme “Sport - Performance and Innovation” and the ADI Design Index 2017 “Award for Innovation”, which led to its being presented to the President of the Italian Republic for the assigning of the National Award for Innovation (“The Award of Awards”); it then received the “Grand Award” in the Design for Asia 2017 competition in Hong Kong, and the more recent Design Intelligence Award in the category Excellence at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou.
